Rachel Hyde, on Level 5 BA (Hons) Illustration at the Arts University Bournemouth was recently commissioned to design a window display for Posh Totty Designs in Brighton.
For my ‘Visual Thinking’ unit in first year, we were required to make a zine based around a given theme. From my starting theme of capitalism I decided to base my zine on independent shops in Brighton’s North Laines.
I taught myself a freehand machine embroidery technique and ended up making a fully stitched material zine called ‘Independent Brighton‘. One of the shops I featured, ‘Posh Totty Designs’ came into contact with me and asked if I wanted to illustrate a window display for them.
After meeting with the shop’s team, I came up with a design depicting some of Brighton’s most famous buildings and landmarks. Since I moved to Brighton last year, I have found the city very inspiring and wanted to embrace that.
I’ve never done anything like this before so the whole concept was very exciting for me.
