Alex // This project explores the idea of truth and lies, and takes inspiration from music artist Macklemore’s ‘Drug Dealer’ lyrics:

‘My drug dealer was a doctor, doctor
Had the plug from Big Pharma, Pharma
He said that he would heal me, heal me
But he only gave me problems, problems
My drug dealer was a doctor, doctor
Had the plug from Big Pharma, Pharma
I think he trying to kill me, kill me
He tried to kill me for a dollar, dollar’

Initially working with the idea of scale, exploration into the music scale and music notation was undertaken. From such research, I came across the symbol for crescendo/decrescendo. Graphically stylising and softening this symbol, I produced my own typeface consisting only of the first seven letters of the alphabet: ABCDEFG. The sole purpose of only producing these seven letters was to fit in with functionality: each letter represents a different note on the music scale and, collectively, these notes act as a basis for all music notes.

As previously mentioned, Macklemore’s ‘Drug Dealer’ plays on the idea of truth and lies in the pharmaceutical industry, expressing that doctors are drug dealers. It was for this reason that I decided to visually re-produce Macklemore’s ‘Drug Dealer’ chorus, however, using only the seven letters within my music typeface; whenever any letter from A-G appeared within the chorus, it was replaced with the same letter from the music typeface. Letters which did not have an alternative within the music typeface (letters H-Z) were replaced with solid black dots.

This is a loose publication consisting of eight A4 unbound pages, allowing for a multi-functional publication – each page represents the eight lines from the ‘Drug Dealer’ chorus. The main idea is that these pages can be mixed around and played on any musical instrument; each different page order will create a different musical tune. The dots represent rests in the music. Although this is an A4 publication, these pages can also be used as individual posters, or as a series of posters (on a larger scale). This typographic system could also be altered and developed into a new official visual, musical language.
